Murfreesboro, TN - Power went off in the area of downtown Murfreesboro for a short time on Thursday afternoon. Amy Byers, Public Relations Coordinator for Middle Tennessee Electric, told WGNS News… “At 3:59 PM, the circuit that powers portions of South Church Street and most of Downtown Murfreesboro locked out. After riding out the circuit to determine the cause, we found two lines that were burned down at 752 South Church Street due to lighting striking the pole. Originally, we had over 800 members without power. We were able to isolate the problem and restore power to all but 16 members while further repairs were made.”
The lightning strike occurred outside of a law office on South Church Street near NW Broad Street. One person described the sound of the lighting hitting the pole as a sound that would have been similar to a bomb blast. Thankfully, it appears that no injuries were associated with the incident.
By 5:30, there were only a couple of power outages in Rutherford County and crews from MTE were working to resolve those issues. You can view the MTE power outage map on their website at MTE.com.
