(MURFREESBORO) Lao New Year, also known as Songkran or Pi Mai, will be celebrated in May at the Wat Lao Buddharam temple on the Old Nashville Highway.

Planning for the Lao New Year’s celebration is underway with leaders of the temple and the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office. The breakfast meeting initiated the plans for Sheriff’s Office off-duty deputies to provide security for the temple’s Lao New Year event.

Participating in the meeting were County Commissioner Chantho Sourinho, the monks and leadership of the temple.

The festival officially lasts for three days, whereas the first day is the last day of the old year. The second day is call “day of no day” because it belongs neither to the old nor to the New Year.
