(MURFREESBORO) Did you realize that Special Kids, the Christian based therapy and nursing center, is celebrating it's 25th anniversary? In 1998, motivated by the love of Jesus Christ, Carrie Goodwin, a nurse, and her father, Dick Kleinau, founded Special Kids.
Discouraged by observing the harsh realities that the families of children with special needs face, Dick and Carrie envisioned a place where all families and their children in need of our services would be welcomed with Christian love and healing arms.
Her father, who himself had a grandson with special needs, captured Carrie's vision. Working alongside her father and with the financial support of the Christy Houston Foundation, Special Kids opened in September, 1998--a quarter of a century ago.
Dick always loved children and gave bubble gum to them everywhere he went. In fact, everyone called him "the bubble gum man". He helped to guide the project forward, but just before its opening, Dick passed away.
Golf Tournament This Month
One way to see that Special Kids' work of love continues is to support events like the Spring Golf Classic on Thursday and Friday, May 18-19, 2023 at Indian Hills Golf Club, 405 Calumet Trace in Murfreesboro.
This year’s Spring Golf Classic at Indian Hills will feature a two day tournament with 1pm shotgun starts, check-in starting at 11:30am. Lunch and evening refreshments will be provided. The event will also feature a unique games of skills package.
Proceeds from the tournament go directly to support Special Kids Therapy and Nursing Center™, bridging the gap where insurance reimbursement falls short of the costs so as to better provide for the children Special Kids serves in your community.
Enjoy the game and help Special Kids, $150 per player or a team of four for $600. For more information, phone (615) 893-4892 or email cwoten@specialkidstn.com
Therapy
Special Kids offers physical therapy that helps youth from birth to age 21 with strength, balance and mobility.
Physical Therapy strives to enhance or restore a child’s functional ability through developing the child’s gross motor skills. To put that in terms you can tell your friends, our physical therapy team is working to develop the skills each child needs to reach their greatest mobility, whatever that means for each child.
Once beginning therapy, you will notice Special Kid's treatment motto: "Play is a child's work". They use lots of toys, bubbles, music, and fun activities to motivate children to reach their goals while playing.
