UPDATE: Mixed-Use Development of South Church Street at NW Broad Street to Include Living, Office, Retail Space and Possible Hotel

MURFREESBORO, TN - Plans appear to be in a holding pattern for the development of more than a block of property along NW Broad Street between Vine and South Church Streets, and another section of land that currently holds a City of Murfreesboro parking lot on South Church at East Sevier Streets. However, work is in progress to prepare for the future development.

The land is currently home to WGNS Radio, the old police department, the Murfreesboro Fire and Rescue Administration office and more – all of which will be torn down at some point. Vice Mayor Bill Shacklett told WGNS one component of the new development will be discounted housing for first responders and educators… The new mixed-use structure will include housing, retail, office, restaurant space and even a hotel.

WGNS will have a small hand in the project as the station, which has nearly 80-years of history in Murfreesboro, plans to build brand new offices and larger studios within 50-yards of our current building. WGNS has owned the building for much of our lifespan. Originally, the WGNS Studios were on the historic Rutherford County square.

A timeline for redeveloping the block has not been announced and plans to start the demolition of the old police headquarters has not been finalized. Developers were scheduled to discuss the project with city officials at a May 10th City Workshop Meeting, but developers had to postpone the meeting at the last minute. WGNS hopes to have more details on the proposed mixed-use structure in the near future.
