MURFREESBORO, TENN – A case involving the murder of a roommate on Ransom Drive in Murfreesboro will go before a Rutherford County Grand Jury. According to Rutherford County District Attorney Jennings Jones… Murfreesboro Detective David Miller, the lead investigator in the case, charged Malik Smith with the First-Degree Murder of 31-year-old Phillip Maddox, Jr.
According to the Murfreesboro Police Department, the murder occurred at the Freedom Recovery House at 2022 Ransom Drive. The home is reported to be an addiction treatment halfway house, which is where Smith is accused of stabbing Maddox in the neck on Monday, February 13, 2023. Police say that Maddox pronounced deceased on the scene.
During a Preliminary Hearing this past week (Wednesday, May 31, 2023), the court found probable cause to bound the case over to the Rutherford County Grand Jury. The 24-Year-old suspect remains behind bars at the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center in Murfreesboro. Smith was booked into the jail during the early morning hours of February 14, 2023.
Mr. Maddox leaves behind his wife, step-sons, 2-brothers, 1-sister and his mother.
Suspect Malik Smith is represented by Council Jon Slager and the State is represented by Assistant District Attorney Trevor Lynch.
