MURFREESBORO, TENN – The 5th person to drown in Percy Priest Lake this year has been identified as 32-year-old Jorge Guevara Ventura of the Nashville area. He died this past Sunday.
TWRA reports Ventura went underwater and never resurfaced while in the Cook Recreation Area of the lake on the Hermitage, Tennessee side of the waterway. He and a friend were boating when their vessel had engine trouble. Reports indicate Ventura was attempting to swim the boat to shore with a rope.
In 2023, a total of 12 boating-related fatalities have been reported across the state. 5-Fatal boating-related deaths occurred on Percy Priest Lake.
TWRA Reports Memorial Day Holiday Report - When looking back to this years Memorial Day weekend, which is the start of the water season for many families in the Volunteer State, the TWRA confirmed that one boating-related fatality occurred statewide. 43-Year-old U.S. Veteran Yeu Thach of Sumner County drowned on Percy Priest Lake. The Memorial Day weekend started on Friday, May 26th with Memorial Day on Monday, May 29, 2023.
The TWRA made a total of 14-BUI (Boating Under the Influence) arrests during the Memorial Day holiday period this year. Of those arrests, 3 were in East Tennessee, 1 was in West Tennessee and 10 BUI arrests were made in Middle Tennessee and the Cumberland Plateau region.
