(I-24) Drivers traveling between Murfreesboro and Nashville and back should notice a more reliable commute after the I-24 SMART Corridor was installed. The dedication of this high-tech system was made on Wednesday (6/28/2023). It is the first of its kind in the Volunteer State.
Commissioner Butch Eley of the Tennessee Department of Transportation joined La Vergne Mayor Jason Cole, Smyrna Mayor Mary Esther Reed, Murfreesboro Mayor Shane McFarland and state Rep. Tim Rudd in speaking about the opening of the system Wednesday in La Vergne.
Eley compared the project to the guitar playing performed by musicians in Nashville when he said the project may be fine-tuned to meet commuters’ needs.
The I-24 SMART Corridor runs 28 miles from the South Church Street exit in Murfreesboro to Interstate 440 in Nashville, along U.S. Highway 41/70 (New Nashville Highway) to Nashville and connector roads between New Nashville Highway and I-24.
When traffic is flowing well, signs will show the posted speed limit.
During incidents, the overhead gantries will show the speed limit for road conditions. Red arrows will show closed lanes, yellow areas will indicate drivers should change lanes and green arrows will show open lanes.
The project included extending ramp lengths and adding emergency pull-off areas.
