During the hot days of summer, both adults and children enjoy sinking into the nice cool waters of area lakes, streams and swimming pools. But having a body of water in your backyard or nearby, can equal increased risks, especially for children.

Most recently, a 7-year-old child that was previously reported as missing, was later located deceased in a swimming pool. The coordinated search for the child even involved the Metro Nashville Police aviation division. Sadly on Sunday, the young girl was found unresponsive in a pool near a family member’s home on Village Green Drive in the Nashville area. Despite officers jumping into the water, pulling her from the pool, and beginning resuscitation efforts on the child, she did not survive.

Police believe the child, who walked away from the residence around 5:40 a.m., went through a fence before attempting to swim in the pool. Evidently, she got into the pool on the deep end, which was a depth of 8-feet. Her family originally reported her missing around 6 a.m. this past Sunday.

According to the Centers for Disease Control ad Prevention (CDC), more children ages 1 thru 4 die from drowning than any other cause of death. For children ages 5 thru 14, drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional death, falling behind motor vehicle crashes.

Every year in the United States there are an estimated 4,000 unintentional fatal drownings, which equals 11-deaths by drowning per day. On top of that number, the CDC reports another 8,000 non-fatal drownings annually in America. See more statistics on drowning from the CDC here.
