The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation released its 2022 ‘Crime in Tennessee’ publication, which details the volume and nature of crime, as reported by the state’s law enforcement agencies. The report compiles data submitted to TBI through the Tennessee Incident-Based Reporting System (TIBRS).
TIME OF DAY - According to the report, the largest number of crimes in Tennessee occurred between the hours of 3PM and 5:59PM. The second peak in crime fell between 6PM and 8:59PM. The third largest time period for crime to unfold was between noon and 2:59PM, according to the TBI.
WHERE CRIME OCCURS – The latest statistics released for Tennessee show 41.13% of crime happened in homes or residential areas last year. 15.2% of crime occurred on roadways, in alleys or on highways. Only 2.23% of crime was reported at elementary / secondary schools and less than 1% of criminal acts occurred on hospital campuses.
AGE and SEX OF VICTIMS – When documenting and studying the age and sex of victims who reported a crime done to them, there were 346,362 total victims, representing a 1.08% increase between 2021 and 2022. Of that number, there were 183,167 female victims, 161,452 male victims and 1,043 victims where their sex was not recorded. As for age, the biggest group hit by crime were those who were 25 to 34-years-old. The second biggest group were 35 to 44-year-olds, followed by 18 to 24-year-olds. Those aged 65 or older were the least likely to fall victim to crime in Tennessee.
Among the report’s findings:
- Reported incidents of Murder, Rape, and Kidnapping all decreased, by double-digit percentages, from 2021 to 2022.
- 119,215 Group A arrests were made in 2022, of which 7.98% were juveniles.
- The number of reported DUI arrests decreased from 19,656 in 2021 to 17,794 in 2022.
- The number of reported Identity Theft victims increased 25.55% from 2021 to 2022.
“The TIBRS program continues to serve as a model for the nation and remains successful because of the continued cooperation by Tennessee’s law enforcement community,” said TBI Director David Rausch. “TBI remains committed to this effort and will continue to provide the training and technical assistance necessary to collect the most accurate and comprehensive crime statistics for Tennessee and its citizens.”
