RUTHERFORD COUNTY, TN - Average gasoline prices in Tennessee have risen 21.1 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.37/g today, according to GasBuddy's survey of 3,821 stations in Tennessee. Prices in Tennessee are 31.1 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand 37.5 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has jumped 15.5 cents in the last week and stands at $3.99 per gallon.

In Rutherford County, prices for regular unleaded fuel are averaging $3.38 per gallon, according to AAA, the Auto Club. The Murfreesboro, Smyrna and LaVergne area is right in the middle of prices that motorists are currently seeing at the pump. Cheaper gas can be found in neighboring Bedford County, but not that much cheaper. The average price at the pump in the Shelbyville area is sitting at $3.37 per gallon, which is only a penny cheaper than Rutherford County. The highest prices in the Volunteer State can be found West of us in Williamson County, where regular unleaded is averaging $3.66 per gallon. The cheapest gas in the state is in Henry County, which is on the Kentucky border. There, gas is averaging $3.17 per gallon.

Three-weeks ago, the average price of regular unleaded in Rutherford County was priced at $3.14 per gallon. Two-weeks ago, gas was selling for an average price of $3.05 per gallon in the Murfreesboro, Smyrna and LaVergne area. That’s 0.33-cents cheaper than prices today!

DIESEL: The average price of diesel in Tennessee is sitting at $3.80 per gallon. Compared to this same period of time last year, that’s a bargain. Last year, diesel was priced at $5.00 per gallon. When examining month-to-month prices… todays price of diesel is 0.20-cents higher than the prices recorded in June. Two-weeks ago, diesel was sitting at $3.59 per gallon.

Diesel, which is typically more fuel efficient, is currently cheaper than premium grade gas, which is a perk for many motorists that drive diesel vehicles. Today, there is a long list of vehicles that require 91-octane or higher. By the way, it’s a myth that premium grade fuel offers any more miles-per-gallon than regular unleaded. Higher octane gas is simply a higher performing fuel that is required for most luxury cars and / or high-performance sports cars. For engines that require higher octane gas, it’s a good idea to follow the recommended octane rating that’s suggested by the manufacture. Otherwise, you could introduce engine knocking to your ride and overtime, it could lead to a damaged engine.
