SMYRNA, Tennessee—Jason Irvin, Smyrna Police Department Police Chief, is pleased to announce the promotion of two new captains to fill existing vacancies. Newly appointed Captains Bobby Gibson and James Scott will assume their roles on August 25, 2023.
The captain’s positions recently became available due to the promotions of Assistant Chiefs Jeff Dwyer and John Liehr. “Our goal is to ensure that the citizens continue to receive the service and support they deserve,” explained Irvin. “Sergeant Gibson and Detective Scott are both longterm valued employees and will seamlessly transition to these elevated positions. “ Town Manager, Brian D. Hercules, remarked, “We are fortunate to have impactful and dedicated employees prepared to accept added responsibilities that increase our ability to protect and serve Smyrna residents.”
Patrol Captain Bobby Gibson began his law enforcement career with the Smyrna Police Department in 1995. He worked his way through the ranks of the department, serving as a patrol officer, K9 officer, Supervisor of Community Services and DARE Division, Training Division, Corporal in the Patrol Division, and Sergeant in the Patrol Division. Captain Gibson holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Middle Tennessee State University, and graduated from the FBI LEEDA Training Trilogy. "I'm honored today to promote Sergeant Bobby Gibson as the next Captain of Uniform Services for the Smyrna Police Department. Sergeant Gibson has worked with the department since 1995 and has served honorably. He has worked in multiple areas within the organization and has vast experience in Training and SWAT. He brings a wide array of skills, knowledge and tactical abilities to the table that will help our administrative team be stronger as we move forward." explained Irvin.
Administrative Captain James Scott has served with the Smyrna Police Department since 1995. He worked his way through the ranks of the department, serving as a patrol officer, a Field Training Officer, a SWAT Officer, and Detective Division. In 2015 he was part of a team to implement and administer a department software upgrade that included Computer Aided Dispatch and Records Management software. In 2020, he was assigned to work in the Administration Division. While working with the Command Staff he assisted in budgetary planning, implementation and systems integration. Captain Scott holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Middle Tennessee State University. Irvin noted, "I'm excited to promote Detective James Scott as the next Captain of Investigative and Administrative Services for the Smyrna Police Department. Detective Scott has been with the Department since 1995 and has served with distinction. He has worked in multiple areas of the Department including many years as a detective and has proven himself as a problem solver and forward thinker with the ability to understand processes and systems. His unique skill set and knowledge as it relates to technology is a much needed attribute that is necessary to move the Department into the future."
