MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The father of the young man who was severely burned in a 5-car accident this past Saturday thanked Murfreesboro firefighters this week for saving his son from the burning vehicle he was trapped inside of. Jay Swaim was rushed to Vanderbilt Medical Center by Life Flight helicopter after being rescued by members of Murfreesboro Fire & Rescue Department's Station 8.
Eric Swaim, the father of the 24-year-old accident victim stated... Station 8 is only a block away from the scene of the crash... The multi-car accident occurred at the intersection of East Northfield Boulevard at Lascassas Pike in Murfreesboro.
MFRD Captain Kenny McFarland of Station 8 talked about the intensity of the fire when they arrived on the scene, not knowing if there were any survivors in the car... But McFarland confirmed, the firemen saved the young man... That fire hall is less than 1200 feet from the intersection of where the wreck unfolded.
Online, Swaim's father posted more details about the accident saying his son was sitting at a red light when his car was struck from behind by what he described as a speeding truck. Larry Flowers with the Murfreesboro Police Department told WGNS in an email that investigators are trying to determine if speed contributed to the five-car crash on Saturday. Flowers also wrote in a press release, “Charges will be pending based on the outcome of the investigation.”
The injuries that Jay Swaim suffers from include multiple burns and broken bones. His father wrote, "He will need skin grafts for his arm and head, facial reconstructive surgeries, plastic surgery on a severe cut on his lip, and other injuries."
