Rutherford County Commissioner Craig Harris Talks About the Increased Cost of Growth and the Idea of a County Impact Fee

Feb 09, 2024 at 09:15 am by WGNS News

Today on the WGNS Action Line, WGNS' Scott Walker talked to Rutherford County Commissioner Craig Harris from District 15.

One of the key items discussed was the ongoing proposal of impact fees being charged on new developments in Rutherford County. However, Rutherford County is prohibited from putting such a tax in place. But, Rutherford County is not alone, because nearby Wilson and Williamson County are also barred from implementing impact fees.

Despite state law prohibiting Rutherford County from charging an impact fee, the City of Murfreesboro can - and is. Will the Rutherford County government be allowed to charge an impact fee in the near future?

Also highlighted on today's show was the cost of new schools. Most recently, the Rutherford County Schools purchased a portion of the Batey Farm property in the Blackman Community. Shortly after, the county schools received the green-light to move forward with construction, which will cost $59.8-million. How will the county progress if the price of land and the cost of construction continue to rise?
