Anticipation is building as millions of the oversized insects are expected to emerge from the ground in mid-May after hibernating for the past 13 years.
The Brood XIX cicadas, known for their distinctive appearance and deafening chorus, are set to make their presence known not only in Rutherford County but also in neighboring counties such as Williamson, Bedford, Davidson, Cannon, Wilson, and more... As the countdown to mid-May begins, residents are advised to prepare for the return of the 13-year cicadas, a native North American insect, and embrace this awe-inspiring natural phenomenon. After flying around for a few weeks, most of the bugs will disappear by the end of June – and then you won't see them again, for another 13-years.
By the way, the resurgence of these flying creatures, ranging from 1 to 2 inches in size, will extend throughout most of Middle Tennessee, marking their return after being in hiding since 2011.
