Rutherford County, TN - Residents of Rutherford County and surrounding areas are gearing up for the return of a natural phenomenon as the swarming of the cicadas is set to make its grand reappearance this year. Anticipation is building as millions of the oversized insects are expected to emerge from the ground in mid-May after hibernating for the past 13 years.

The Brood XIX cicadas, known for their distinctive appearance and deafening chorus, are set to make their presence known not only in Rutherford County but also in neighboring counties such as Williamson, Bedford, Davidson, Cannon, Wilson, and more... That was Rutherford County Agriculture Extension Agent Mitchel Mote.

Interestingly, past research has shown that the sound frequency of male cicadas is similar to that of a residential weed eater...

The cicadas will begin their ascent to the surface when the ground temperature reaches 64 degrees Fahrenheit. Once above ground, their presence will be unmistakable as the males' mating calls, reaching up to 100 decibels, fill the air. Anthony Tuggle, director of the extension service said...

As the countdown to mid-May begins, residents are advised to prepare for the return of the 13-year cicadas, a native North American insect, and embrace this awe-inspiring natural phenomenon. After flying around for a few weeks, most of the bugs will disappear by the end of June – and then you won't see them again, for another 13-years.

By the way, the resurgence of these flying creatures, ranging from 1 to 2 inches in size, will extend throughout most of Middle Tennessee, marking their return after being in hiding since 2011.
