Clemmie Greenly found herself ensnared in the relentless cycle of neglecting her health during her personal journey of transition. Pushing through sickness, disregarding her nutrition, and shrugging off the importance of regular screenings and health appointments became habitual. However, in 2003, Clemmie faced an unexpected tragedy as she lost her son, a loss that left her grappling with unimaginable pain. "So I buried my grief and took on the weight of responsibility and demands of everyday life, continuing to overlook my health overall," she recounted. This pattern persisted, compounded by another devastating loss in 2014 with the sudden deaths of her grandson and nephew.
In the summer of 2017, Clemmie received an invitation to speak at San Quentin prison, prompting reflection on her journey. Recalling the warnings from her doctors, she realized the risks she had taken by neglecting her health. By April 2018, Clemmie's health had deteriorated to the point where she could no longer ignore the signs, prompting her brother's insistence that she seek medical attention.
Admitted to Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital West, Clemmie faced uncertainty and hope as she learned her heart was not functioning correctly. With faith and support, including prayer sessions with Dr. Matthew deShazo, she awaited a new heart. On May 15th, 2018, Clemmie received life-changing news: a new heart was on its way from Texas, and two days later, she underwent successful transplant surgery.
Surrounded by love and support during her hospital stay, Clemmie emerged with renewed energy. Five years since her surgery, she is living her best life, grateful for her second chance. Clemmie's message is clear: prioritize health, heed medical advice, and listen to your body, for it may offer the gift of a new beginning.
