La Vergne, TN - A Native American man recently addressed the Rutherford County Board of Education, advocating for his son's right to wear an eagle feather in his graduation cap.

Stephen White Eagle passionately spoke about the significance of the eagle feather in their family's religion and culture, emphasizing its use in tribal dances, ceremonies, and daily prayers.

Despite facing opposition from school administrators, who cited policy restrictions, White Eagle argued that allowing religious expression should be consistent for all students, regardless of their faith.

Following public comment, board member Tammy Sharp, drawing on her personal connection to Native American culture through marriage, proposed a motion to permit the student to wear the feather during the graduation ceremony.

The motion was unanimously approved by the board, ensuring the student's right to honor his religious beliefs at this milestone event.
