MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – (May 20, 2024) A Murfreesboro woman has been indicted on charges of murder and abuse following the death of her four-week-old son in April 2023.

Jalani Patton, 25, was indicted by a Rutherford County Grand Jury on felony first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse charges. She was arrested on Wednesday, May 16, following sealed indictments.

The investigation began on April 22, 2023, when officers responded to a call at Ashwood Cove Apartments on N. Tennessee Blvd. regarding an unresponsive infant. Patton claimed the baby fell off the bed and hit his head, but he later died at the hospital. An autopsy conducted by the medical examiner revealed the cause of death to be blunt force head trauma, and the death was ruled a homicide.

Patton is currently held at the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center on a $250,000 bond. She is scheduled to appear in Rutherford County Circuit Court on June 25.
