Murfreesboro, TN - Rutherford County government has entered into a five-year contract which is renewable for up to 20 years with Waste Management Inc. of Tennessee to load, transport and dispose of solid waste from the transfer station.
A transfer station is a facility where solid waste is delivered and prepared for transport to its final destination. The transfer station will be located at 6000 Landfill Road in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and will be completed in March or April 2025.
"Signing this contract is a part of making sure the fastest growing county in Tennessee is on its way to becoming solid waste independent," Rutherford County Mayor Joe Carr said. "This is a landmark as we continue to provide essential services for Rutherford County in the most cost effective manner."
Rutherford County will own and operate the Transfer Station. It is designed to be financially self-supporting with no property tax dollars associated with the facility's operation. The transfer station revenue is expected to cover any future disposal cost of solid waste collected at the county’s convenience centers.
“Today marks a significant milestone in the march toward solid waste management independence for Rutherford County,” Rutherford County Solid Waste Director Bishop Wagener said. “Waste collected at our new solid waste transfer station will find its final destination with WM for the next several years. Thank you to Mayor Carr, the Rutherford County Board of Commissioners, and the Rutherford County citizens for your continued support as we grow as a community”.
