MURFREESBORO, TN – Eighteen people had to be evacuated from homes in the 500 block of Westgate Blvd., between Jonquil Ct. and Lilly Lane, because of a gas leak. Westgate Blvd. is near Riverdale High School in Murfreesboro. The incident began when utility workers accidently struck a gas line just before 10:15 AM, Monday morning, according to Murfreesboro Police.

Taking every precaution into account, MPD police officers worked to shut down the roadway as Fire & Rescue arrived to further ensure the safety of residents and workers in the area.  Evidently, the crew that struck the gas line while digging were with AT&T.

Throughout the morning, fire fighters monitored the sewer and wastewater drainage areas to check for the presence of gas and police officers re-directed traffic after evacuating the immediate area on Monday during the repair. As first responders worked around the scene of the incident, Atmos Energy assessed the situation, detailed what needed to be done and quickly shut-off the leak. All was fixed within about a 3-hour window from when it was first reported.
