Online Car Purchase in Murfreesboro Turns Sour when South Carolina Woman Learns Her Porsche’s Mileage Was Falsified

MURFRESSBORO, Tenn. – After finding the perfect Sport Utility Vehicle in Murfreesboro, a South Carolina woman learned the hard way that not all deals on Facebook Marketplace are what they seem.

Evidently, the woman was scrolling through the popular social media page when she thought she'd struck gold with the finding of a 2016 Porsche Cayenne, priced at a little over $8,000. Of course, who wouldn’t jump at the chance to buy a luxury SUV at the price of a used Corolla? And in this case, a luxury SUV with less than 90-thousand miles on it.

The deal seemed straightforward enough, so the woman made the long journey to Murfreesboro to close it. After all, who needs Carfax when you’ve got gut instinct? But upon returning home to register her new whip, things took a steep downhill slide. Apparently, that flashy low number on the odometer was more of a wishful suggestion than an actual mileage count. The real miles on the Porsche were more than 81-thousand miles over what the vehicle was showing, which was 81k more than what the marketplace ad stated.

For context, the base price for a 2016 Porsche Cayenne started at about $60,000 when it first rolled off the lot. These days, a gently-used base model Cayenne typically sells for $17,000 to $21,000 — assuming it’s not moonlighting as a high-mileage Uber. But, for a mere $8,000, it looks like the victim in this case got a lot more (mileage) than she bargained for.

Murfreesboro Police are now looking into the incident, investigating what appears to be an all-too-common case of odometer fraud. If only this kind of ‘deal’ came with a refund policy, but it didn’t - - because it was a vehicle sold fraudulently by an individual and not a licensed car dealer.

So, the next time you're tempted by that Facebook ad offering luxury at a rock-bottom price, just remember: sometimes, you really do get what you pay for... plus about 100,000 extra miles.
