(MURFREESBORO, TN) UPDATE: A 9-1-1 call led Murfreesboro Police to a gas station on Joe B. Jackson Parkway this past May, where one witness said that chaos had unfolded at the otherwise quiet interstate stop. Rutherford County District Attorney General Jennings Jones explained what was witnessed by police as they arrived... Devon Loritts, 23, of Georgia, was shot multiple times and transported to the hospital where he died. Loritts’ brother Eric Mitchell was shot in the arm and beaten across the head, face and body, according to the District Attorney. Mitchell was flown to the hospital by helicopter, where he was medically treated and eventually released.

The situation appeared to have started over a dispute regarding the ownership of a Chrysler 300 sedan, which detectives located at the scene of the shooting. The car had a partial black vinyl wrap, and it looked as if someone was actively removing the wrap from the hood of the car before police arrived.

Loritts and his brother driving away in the Chrysler is what ultimately led 26-year-old Juan Charco of Antioch to fire over 20 rounds from a semi-automatic rifle at Loritts and Mitchell... The DA went on to state... Charco was charged with second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder, while Charco’s brother was interviewed by detectives and released.

After the courts determined there was reasonable evidence against the defendant... Juan Charco is scheduled to appear in a Rutherford County courtroom for an arraignment just four days before his 27th birthday, on December 13, 2024, at 9:01 AM. At that time, Charco will formally hear any charges brought against him after the case is presented to a grand jury.

This past May, Charco's bond was set at $1.5 million . However, it was later reduced to $500,000 this past August, allowing him to be released after meeting bond requirements with Free At Last Bonding, McAdoo Bonding, and 911 Bail Bonding.

According to the original release from Murfreesboro Police Public Information Officer Larry Flowers, the preliminary investigation reveals that the incident may have started over the disputed ownership of a car, specifically a Chrysler 300. During the first report that WGNS received on May 16, 2024 (one day after the shooting), it was stated that Loritts had previously purchased the car from Charco. The car was taken from Georgia and tracked to the 7-Eleven Exxon on Joe B. Jackson Parkway in Murfreesboro, where the shooting occurred at 2:39 PM. After the shooting, the Charco brothers allegedly began fighting Loritts and his brother Eric Mitchell, who reportedly ran inside the gas station seeking help for his brother, Devon Loritts, who had been shot multiple times.

MPD officers arrived and started emergency medical aid on both shooting victims, applying a tourniquet to Mitchell’s arm to control the bleeding. Firefighters from the Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department and personnel with Rutherford County Emergency Medical Services took over advanced emergency care.

Juan Charco was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder. He was subsequently booked into the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center under a $1.5 million bond.
