It is with heavy hearts that Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) and the wider community mourn the passing of former Lady Raiders Head Basketball Coach Lewis Bivens. Bivens, who celebrated his 79th birthday last Thursday, October 24, passed away six days later on Wednesday, October 30, surrounded by family.
Bivens served as head coach of the Lady Raiders from 1987 to 1997, leading the team through a transformative decade in which they recorded a 182-103 win-loss record, made two NCAA Tournament appearances, and won four conference championships. His achievements made a lasting impact on MTSU athletics, inspiring players and fans alike with his perseverance and dedication.
In 1991, Bivens faced a life-altering challenge that underscored his resilience. After a routine surgery to remove a blood clot, a complication left him temporarily paralyzed from the waist down. Despite coaching from a wheelchair, he continued to lead the Lady Raiders with courage, and the team rallied to multiple victories, including additional OVC Championships.
In a tribute, MTSU’s Deputy Athletic Director Diane Turnham shared, “It is with great sadness that I share the passing of former Blue Raider Head Coach Lewis Bivens. His life was dedicated to coaching women’s basketball at Carson Newman and Middle Tennessee State University. He will be greatly missed.”
Monte Hale Jr. of All Sports Talk on WGNS Radio echoed these sentiments, saying, “My heart aches tremendously tonight hearing of the passing of former MTSU women's basketball coach Lewis Bivens. What a beautiful person. Proud to have been a good friend of his. A great basketball coach but a better person. RIP my friend.”
