From Handcuffs to Hide-and-Seek: Escaped Inmate Recaptured After Two-Day Run

Tony Jameson Sweeton’s short-lived stint as a fugitive on-the-run came to an end on November 22, 2024, proving that escaping from law enforcement while handcuffed isn’t exactly the master plan it sounds like. The 23-year-old Coffee County inmate reportedly fled custody on the evening of November 20, making a dramatic exit from a transport vehicle near the Franklin and Coffee County line at Highway 127 and Wattendorf Highway. Despite the added challenge of being shackled, Sweeton decided to test his luck—and the patience of local law enforcement.

Sweeton’s charges read like a shopping list of poor decisions: aggravated assault, assault on first responders (three times, for good measure), theft of a motor vehicle, domestic violence, vandalism (twice), and even contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Oh, and let’s not forget the statutory rape charge he was addressing in Franklin County Circuit Court earlier that day. Clearly, Sweeton’s record rivals the length of a CVS receipt.

Law enforcement, however, wasn’t playing games. Deputies from Franklin and Coffee Counties, Tullahoma and Manchester police, the Tennessee Highway Patrol, and even Arnold Air Force Base Police swarmed the area, creating a perimeter around the wooded landscape west of his escape point. For two days, Sweeton tried his best to evade capture, but with that many agencies on his tail, it was only a matter of time before his hide-and-seek skills fell short.

“Inmate Tony Sweeten along with his mother are heading to jail.” It appears the family reunion wasn’t exactly the Hallmark moment one might hope for.

On November 22, Sweeton was arrested and returned to custody. The Coffee County Sheriff's Office issued a statement that might have raised a few eyebrows: “Inmate Tony Sweeten along with his mother are heading to jail.” It appears the family reunion wasn’t exactly the Hallmark moment one might hope for.

Sweeton, who had already accumulated enough charges to keep legal experts busy for weeks, now faces additional consequences for his ill-fated jailbreak. Perhaps next time he’ll reconsider running—especially while wearing handcuffs.
