Red Cross Responds as Winter Weather Causes Blood Drive Cancellations, Power Outages, Dangerous Conditions

STATEWIDE — A major winter storm covering a large part of the country is impacting millions of people in the U.S., a situation expected to continue as a new storm threatens to cover more than 20 states with a wintery mess through the upcoming weekend, including Tennessee. The American Red Cross of Tennessee is preparing, urging residents to follow the safety steps in this article.

The storms have already caused the cancellation of about 200 blood drives across the country — double the number of drives lost Monday — resulting in about 5,000 blood donations going uncollected so far in the new year. Where it is safe to do so, we encourage people to schedule a blood donation appointment by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Over the next few days, a new storm may cause snow and ice across an area stretching from Texas to Virginia. Some areas will experience single-digit temperatures and the snow may spread into areas already impacted by Monday’s storm, traveling to the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast this upcoming weekend. As families prepare, the Red Cross has winter weather safety tips.

WINTER SAFETY

Stay warm indoors. If your home becomes too cold, go to a public library, shopping mall or warming center.

Stay warm to avoid frostbite and hypothermia. Your nose, ears, cheeks, chin, fingers and toes are often the first areas affected.

POWER OUTAGES

If you’re using a generator to power your home, please keep it outside and away from doors, windows and vents to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

During a power outage, unplug appliances and electronics to avoid damage from power surges. Leave one light on, so you’ll know when power is restored.

To prevent illness, keep food cold. When in doubt, throw it out.
