Local Educator Receives Prestigious Presidential Award for STEM Teaching

WASHINGTON, DC - The White House has announced that Erin Nunley is among the educators and mentors recognized as recipients of the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) and the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM). These prestigious awards highlight the critical contributions of educators and mentors in shaping the future of STEM leadership in America. Nunley was nominated for the award while teaching at Overall Creek Elementary in Murfreesboro City Schools. She's currently with the Rutherford County School system at Oakland Middle School. Erin Nunley’s recognition underscores her exceptional impact as a STEM educator, inspiring young minds at Overall Creek Elementary to explore and excel in science and mathematics. Her commitment to creating engaging, inclusive learning experiences embodies the qualities celebrated by the PAEMST.

Recognizing Excellence in STEM Education

The PAEMST, established in 1983, is the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government for K-12 mathematics and science teaching. Recipients are selected from all 50 states, U.S. territories, and Department of Defense Education Activity schools after undergoing a rigorous application and evaluation process. Teachers are chosen for their deep content knowledge, innovative teaching strategies, and ability to inspire a love for STEM among their students.

Mentoring the Next Generation of Innovators

The PAESMEM, established in 1995, honors individuals and organizations for their dedication to mentoring underrepresented groups in STEM fields. Recipients are recognized for their long-term efforts to broaden participation in science, mathematics, and engineering pathways.

Award Details

Both PAEMST and PAESMEM honorees receive a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation (NSF), which administers the awards on behalf of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). These awards highlight the importance of fostering innovation and excellence in STEM education.
