RUTHERFORD COUNTY - The start of 2025 has brought frigid temperatures and snowfall to the area and next week is promising extreme cold across Middle Tennessee.

The National Weather Service is monitoring for potential cold weather alerts to be issued if temperatures or wind chills get cold enough. A Cold Weather Advisory would be issued for temperatures or wind chills at 5 degrees or lower or an Extreme Cold Warning for temperatures or wind chills below 5 degrees below zero. The NWS recently updated their cold weather alert system messenging to simplify watches and warnings.

There will likely be a three day stretch high temperatures won't get above freezing and lows could even dip into the low teens or single digits.

The Arctic cold will require extra precautions to prevent pipes from freezing, keep vehicles operational, and ensure heating systems are functioning effectively. Plus, it will bring challenges for schools, events, businesses and the community at large.
