Murfreesboro, TN - Here's an update on the tragic incidents that took place around 2:30PM Sunday afternoon (1/26/2025) at the Chelsea Place Apartments on Bradyville Pike. An apparent dispute over loud music may be the motive behind the fatal shooting of a one-year-old baby and the injury of the mother on Sunday, according to Murfreesboro Police Department Criminal Investigations Violent Crimes Unit detectives.

The preliminary investigation revealed the shooter was Marquavious Hampton of Chapel Hill. The 24-year-old male became angry due to loud music being played by the mother. This led to an argument and a physical altercation.

Following the altercation, Hampton shot the one-year-old who was seated in a stroller. The mother was shot in the hand after jumping in front of Hampton trying to shield her baby. The baby was pronounced dead on the scene. The mother was taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries.

Reports indicate that Hampton was not the deceased infant's father.

This tragic case is another example of how Murfreesboro Police' new Real Time Crime center's license plate readers are solving crimes on a regular basis.

With assistance of License Plate Reader cameras, crime data analysts were able to get a tag number for the suspect's vehicle. Then a BOLO (Be On The Lookout) for Hampton’s vehicle, a white Dodge Charger, was issued. That alerted Williamson County Sheriff’s Department deputies when the vehicle entered their jurisdiction.

The man sped away from the Williamson County deputies. Those officers spotted the Dodge Charger again. It was parked, and Hampton was found deceased with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The fatal shooting remains under investigation.
