Smithville, TN – A DeKalb County man accused of kidnapping, assaulting, and robbing his own grandparents has been formally indicted by the DeKalb County Grand Jury. The indictment, handed down on Tuesday, March 11, charges 43-year-old John Brent Williams of Four Seasons Road with especially aggravated kidnapping, aggravated robbery, and two counts of aggravated assault.

According to DeKalb County Sheriff Patrick Ray, the incident occurred on April 15, 2024, when Williams allegedly entered his grandparents’ home around 9 p.m. He reportedly went into a bedroom, stole a handgun, and then held his grandmother at gunpoint, refusing to let her leave the house. At the same time, he allegedly ordered his grandfather at gunpoint to surrender the keys to their vehicle, a 2017 black Ford Escape, valued at $11,000.

During the ordeal, Williams is accused of attempting to strangle his grandmother and dragging her by the hair. After obtaining the vehicle keys, he fled the residence, taking both the stolen gun and the car. The following day, on April 16, his grandparents reported the crime to the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office.

Williams was later arrested in Kentucky on unrelated charges before being extradited back to DeKalb County to face prosecution. If convicted, he could face significant prison time for the violent offenses.

Authorities continue to investigate the case as Williams awaits trial.
