Deputies at Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office are sporting a new appearance.

They are now wearing a new green utility uniform representing the traditional sheriff’s color with more than $10,000 savings alone for 75 patrol officers, said Sheriff Robert Arnold.

“Green and tan are the colors of the Tennessee Sheriffs’ Association,” Sheriff Arnold said. “The reason we decided to go with the new utility uniform is that it is a cost savings, more durable and presents a more professional appearance.

Capt. Steve Spence said the old uniforms were easy to snag and tear.

“The new uniforms are made of a rip stock type material that will withstand the environment of rural areas such as foot pursuits,” Capt. Spence said. “The uniforms are made of a stronger material, similar to military wear, and are more durable and last longer.”

Badges and names are monogrammed on each uniform. Deputies received new uniforms three years ago other than those already replaced due to wear.

Used uniforms will be worn by school patrol and donated to the Rutherford County Fire and Rescue Department.

Deputies assigned to civil and criminal warrants and detention are wearing the same green utility uniform while booking deputies are wearing green and tan uniforms. Deputies assigned to court security and transport will wear the everyday, traditional uniforms.

The command staff will wear a traditional uniform of a tan shirt and green pants made of a heavier weight poly wool that will be more durable as well. These uniforms are made in Mt. Pleasant , Tenn.

“We are supporting the economy of the state of Tennessee by using traditional uniforms manufactured by state residents employed by Southeastern Shirt Corp. in Tennessee ,” Sheriff Arnold said.
