Murfreesboro attorney and City Councilman Toby Gilley announced today that he will seek the Republican Party’s nomination for General Sessions Judge, Part III, during the May 6, 2014 Rutherford County primary. If elected, Gilley would replace incumbent Democrat, General Sessions Judge Larry Brandon.
Gilley has served the citizens of Murfreesboro for more than 13 years on the City Council, focusing on access to providing a healthy environment for small business growth, safe and livable neighborhoods and continuing to improve education and recreation resources for the community.
Gilley describes himself as a “conservative Constitutionalist,” and as someone who as always sought justice in every case. Rucker, Rucker & Gilley Law Firm, of which he is a partner, is ranked at the highest level possible with the Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review Ratings. The firm earned an AV Preeminent rating, a testament to the fact that a lawyer's peers rank him or her at the highest level of professional excellence.
Gilley has represented countless individuals, small businesses, and large corporations. He currently serves as a Hearing Officer for the Tennessee Board of Professional Responsibility, the organization that oversees the ethical responsibility of our state’s lawyers.
“The courtroom is truly the one place in our great nation where all citizens are equal,” Gilley said. “And as a Judge, it is my heartfelt goal to insure that all who enter the courtroom leave knowing that they have been heard and had their day.”
During his time on the City Council, Gilley chaired the Risk Management Committee, served on the Water Board, the Planning Commission, the Murfreesboro Power Board and represented the City Council on the Cable Commission and Library Board.
“I believe my many years as a city councilman and as an attorney will be invaluable to me as the next General Sessions Judge,” Gilley said. “Everyone wants the legal system to be fair, impartial and reasonable. That’s the kind of judge I will be.”
Gilley recently served as the treasurer for the Republican Party of Rutherford County. In 2012 he was awarded Rutherford County’s Republican of the Year.
Gilley was raised in McMinnville and received his undergraduate degree at MTSU and his Law Degree at UT Knoxville. Gilley is now in his sixth year of teaching commercial and insurance law at MTSU.
Additionally, Gilley has volunteered with organizations such as Special Olympics and local literacy non-profit Read to Succeed. He and his wife Laurie have been married for 15 years, and have two children who attend public schools. Gilley attends North Blvd Church of Christ. He is an avid runner, currently training to run in the upcoming St. Judge Marathon to raise money for the hospital, his second time running the marathon in three years.
