This past April, the Murfreesboro City Council approved a new five year contract with a company called Sensys of America to install and oversee red light cameras. Which meant, they also had to remove the old red light camera's.

The new contract will likely generate about $380,000 annually for the city. The company behind the camera system will keep around a half million dollars in revenue for overseeing the red light camera's in Murfreesboro. The previous contract earned Murfreesboro about $140,000.

Red light running is down in the City of Murfreesboro and has been on the decrease since the red light cameras were first installed about 8 years ago.

Murfreesboro firs installed red light cameras between 2008 and 2009 due to an increasing number of traffic fatalities at intersections. Numbers of crashes at intersections have dropped by 37 percent since the cameras were first installed.

City Manager Rob Lyons stated...

In 2007 there were 1,692 crashes at signalized intersections in Murfreesboro. In 2015, despite a rise in the population and the growing number of traffic signals, the number of crashes at intersections were down to 1,064 crashes.
