OHS Band Students Have Prayer Vigil After Fatal Crash

Oakland High School students came together Sunday afternoon for a prayer vigil. The day before two school buses carrying the Patriot Band were traveling along highway 231 to a band competition in Lebanon. An SUV reportedly crossed the center line and a head-on collision occured with the lead bus. The driver of the SUV died at the crash scene in Wilson County and nine students were transported to the hospital in Lebanon for non-life threatening injuries. The school bus driver was taken to Vandberbilt with possible broken legs and other injuries. 

In addition to the students traveling in the front bus, a second bus of band students was behind. They all experienced the terror of the event.

Quick thinking by the bus driver, positioned the county school bus in a certain way to reduce the impact, and officials say that 31-year old Holly Lane of Murfreesboro is credited there not being more injuries.  

60-year old Mike Henry, the driver of the Dodge Durango, died at the accident scene. He was from Pleasant Shade in Smith County. Nine students were transported to the hospital in Lebanon for non-life threatening injuries.

The accident occured around 10:30 this past Saturday morning (10/1/2011) on highway 231-North at Cedar Forest Road in neighboring Wilson County.
