Murfreesboro lost a great physician, historian, community leader and friend with the passing of Dr. George W. Smith on Friday (3/23/2018).
Dr. Smith practiced family medicine and his big smile always gave encouragement to those with whom he came in contact.
He grew-up in Decherd, Tennessee and loved history. His undergraduate degree was earned from Tennessee State in 1971. Then he completed his medical degree at Meharry Medical College and did residency at George Hubbard Hospital, both in Nashville. After that, in 1979 George set-up private practice here in Murfreesboro.
Dr. Smith loved this area and helped to start its first rural health clinic in Eagleville. In addition, he served on St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital's Board of Trustees, Continuing Medical Committee, and the Medical Executive Committee. He also was the medical director at Community Care of Rutherford County.
His passion to help and encourage African-American youth was evident with his 30-years of gaining financial support for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Fund.
George loved history. In fact, the Civil War got his attention, and he was one of the founders of the 13th US Colored Troops Living History Association re-enacting group. He was also a fellow member of the Heritage Society of Rutherford County.
Dr. George Smith was active in the Murfreesboro Breakfast Rotary Club and the Civil War Roundtable.
Local State Representative Mike Sparks called for a moment of silence on the House floor on Thursday, knowing that the local leader was seriously ill. He passed away the next day.
Arrangements for Dr. Smith are being handled by Scales and Sons, and are incomplete at this time. NewsRadio WGNS will share information about Dr. Smith's arrangements when they are completed.
