Luther - What Good Neighbors Do

Since going on the air in 1947, WGNS has kept the growing Murfreesboro and Rutherford County community as the focus of our service as the Good Neighbor Station:

Growing from just eight-thousand residents countywide in 1947 to the current populuation of nearly 300-thousand has driven us to find new ways to grow with our community but with the same Good Neighbor focus.

It's a desire to be there for the mother of a missing teenage boy, who tearfully pleads for help finding her child:

We do it because that's what Good Neighbors do.

We help uplift a mom and her two-year old son who are struggling. While her son is receiving treatment for leiukemia, she is battling cystic fibrosis. All he wants is birthday cards:

We air their story and the community responds with an outpouring of cards and gifts:

We share together - as neighbors - in the joy and thankfulness when the community gives to children at Christmas through the Salvation Army Angel Tree program:

Being a good neighbor is also sharing in the worry and division that comes when white supremacists plan a rally in your hometown:

It's pausing with the community to pray for peace:

Being a good neighbor is helping to calm fears while accurately reporting what is going on:

Being a good neighbor means warning of possible dangers, like severe weather:

And being there when it strikes:

Being a good neighbor means warning of dangerous convicts on the loose, who terrorize a family in a neighboring county:

And then lead authorities on a dangerous high speed chase:

Being a good neighbor means not only reporting from the scene, but bringing the story of the hero who helped end ordeal:

As a community, you cheer and celebrate your favorite teams:

Like when MTSU wins an NCAA basketball tournament game for the second year in a row. Or when a local high school celebrates their second state championship:

Over 250 games broadcasts to share the excitment of each win and the agony of every defeat.

Being a community station is an honor and privilage. It's what radio was intended to be. It's what the community deserves. It's what we work hard every day to be. That's why WGNS is Your Good Neighbor Station. It's what the G-N-S stands for -- it's what drives our work each day.
