A Murfreesboro man who told police he was an Uber driver was arrested and charged with his second DUI after allegedly leaving the scene of a car accident. However, Uber says that he never drove for them.

On July 7, 2018, MPD officers responded to a liquor store on Memorial Boulevard where an injury crash was reported. Once on the scene another driver said that a gray vehicle pulled out in front of him causing the wreck. The man said that the suspect car fled the scene. It didn't take long for police to catch up to the gray Hyundai SUV as it was driving with a flat tire and a bumper that was falling off.

After police stopped Bruce Newport, they learned that the man had intentions of driving home. However, police say he was driving in the wrong direction for home. Furthermore, Newport reportedly told police that he was not sure as to why his drivers side airbag deployed or why his tire was flat.

Police wrote in their report, "Officer Taylor advised that Bruce appeared disoriented and had a lack of awareness." Also in the documentation, "Bruce advised he had consumed 2 pints of liquor the night before and was going to the Wine Cellar to get more alcohol."

In addition to being charged with his second DUI, the 52 year old man was also charged with leaving the scene of an accident, duty to render aid and failure to notify police about the accident.

Prior to Newport being booked into the local jail, he told authorities that he was an Uber driver. But, Uber officials told WGNS that he has no record with the company and did not drive for them.
