Since going on the air in 1947, WGNS has kept the growing Murfreesboro and Rutherford County community as the focus of our service as the Good Neighbor Station. There were just eight-thousand residents countywide in 1947 when the station went on the air.

Today's population is estimated at nearly 320-thousand -- and growing fast daily. With the growth, comes the challenge of reaching the increasing audience with the same Good Neighbor focus that's driven the station for 72-years. The GNS in our call letters stands for Good Neighbor Station - and that's what drives each newscast, interview, weather report and ballgame broadcast.

An estimated three-thousand hours of local programming last year, from local talk shows to ballgame broadcasts to twice an hour news and weather every single day keeps listeners informed and entertained. But it goes beyond that.

WGNS is a connection to the people who make the laws:

To those who enforce the laws:

WGNS is a connection to the people that directly affect our daily lives:

Being a good neighbor also means tackling the tough issues we face together and spreading the word about non-profits:

In an important political year - listeners were able to hear from the candidates themselves and ask questions before going to the polls. From city council races...

To county, state and federal races.

WGNS' community involvement goes even beyond connecting listeners with its leaders. From station management being involved on the advisory board of local non-profits, to planning, organizing and sponsoring the Murfreesboro Christmas Parade for over 30-years - the people of WGNS are a direct reflection of the community we serve.

Even when it gets personal. Legislation was presented before the state legislature to abolish the statute of limitations in Tennessee against those who sexually abuse children. WGNS' Scott Walker is the one who proposed the bill after opening up about being sexually abused at age 12:

As neighbors we celebrate together the triumphs of our favorite teams with LIVE broadcasts:

Warn our neighbors of incoming bad weather:

Are there after it strikes:

Even if it's means going from reporting the news to being the news:

When WGNS needed the community, they were there with us. Thousands of grieving listeners calling, writing, dropping by - to share in our pain. See, it was their pain too. We were in this together. It's a special connection we have with our listeners and it goes back to being a Good Neighbor. Their neighbor - their friend.

Being a community station is an honor and privilage. It's what radio was intended to be. It's what the community deserves. It's what we work hard every day to be. That's why WGNS is Your Good Neighbor Station. It's what the G-N-S stands for -- it's what drives our work each day.
