Serious injuries...car vs bicycle on Broad at W. Main 6:30 Wednesday night.

A bike-car crash on Broad at West Main Streets around 6:30 Wednesday night sent one to the hospital with very serious injuries. Public Information Officer Kyle Evans told WGNS News

(above photo) The crumpled bicycle lies near the rear wheel of the police car at the corner of Broad and West Main Streets. The bike's impact point was on the rear driver's side of the Honda Civic. The vehicles was traveling in a northerly direction (toward Smyrna). 

A Good Samaritan, who had CPR training, attempted to recesitate the victim. He noted that the victim's eyes were wide open and did not respond to light, and he knew the man's condition was very serious. The local businessman said he was there before emergency responders and a crowd was simply watching and not offering any assistance. He humbly said, "I hope my training saved a life tonight."

The Murfreesboro Police Department Fatal Accident Crash Team (FACT) is investigating a serious injury crash that occurred at the intersection of N.W. Broad Street and West Main Street. The crash occurred around 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday December 28, 2011.

After a preliminary investigation, FACT investigators believe a 2005 silver Honda Accord driven by Mr. Donnie Leath of Morrison, TN (8-26-80) was traveling N.W. on Broad Street and stopped at the intersection of West Main Street for a red traffic signal. The signal cycled to green and the vehicle began to accelerate from a stopped position. A bicyclist, Kenneth Haydel of Murfreesboro, TN (3-1-58) was traveling East on West Main Street and attempted to cross N.W. Broad Street. The bicyclist struck the side of vehicle and suffered serious injuries. He was transported to Middle Tennessee Medical Center and later to Vanderbilt Hospital via Lifeflight. Haydel is currently in critical but stable condition.

The Fatal Accident Crash Team is investigating.
