He is a Tennessee native, having grown-up in Covington. Drew completed his undergraduate degree in engineering from Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville. Next he attended Memphis Theological Seminary, and later earned a Doctor of Ministry from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC.

Prior to moving to Murfreesboro, Dr. Shelley was senior pastor of Crossville First United Methodist Church.
