Odor Sites In 'Boro

(MURFREESBORO)  Residents have been reporting "strange smells" in parts of the city.  WGNS has devoted numerous broadcast to the topic where city engineers respond to telephone and text questions from the public.

Republic Services' Middle Point Landfill team shared real-time information that reportedly is helping to eliminate various potential on-site odor sources.

Middle Point General Manager Jeremy Jernigan said, “We’re grateful for the way the community has stepped up. Using specific location information, weather conditions and odor descriptions via the Middle Point website helps our team to promptly investigate and collect data to ultimately determine the source or sources.”

Since a week ago Friday (10/2/2020), Middle Point has received 98 reports of potential off-site odor. Of these reports, 10 were considered to have been potentially attributable to on-site operations, 8 were believed to be attributed to non-landfill sources, and 80 were not provided in real-time or close to real-time or did not provide enough specific location information and were unable to be investigated by the on-site team.

Middle Point is continuing to collect data and map reports to established reporting clusters and get to the bottom of the sources of odor as quickly as possible. The community is encouraged to continue sharing specific details, particularly location information, in as close to real time as possible with the landfill team via the Middle Point website. When submitting a report, please include:

  • Location (address, cross streets or landmark) where odor is detected
  • Time of day when odor is detected
  • Weather or wind conditions at the time
  • Identifying any other potential sources or infrastructure in the vicinity
  • Description of the type of odor detected (sewer, trash, gas or other)
  • Potency of the odor detected (from 1 [barely detectable] to 5 [high])

Jernigan noted, “Our team is committed to responding to every actionable report and doing everything we can to help get the community answers. The community has been extremely helpful, and we appreciate residents’ taking the time to share information with our team.”
