Decoration Day will take place at a community cemetery on Sunday, June 6th in the Midland area. Phillip Ryan, who lives in Midland, will be the guest speaker at the Smotherman Cemetery on June 6th at 2PM.
Decoration Day gained roots in 1862, during the April battle of Shiloh, which was fought in Hardin County, Tennessee, along the Mississippi state line. It was started as a memorial to remember and honor the dead, so they will never be forgotten.
On Memorial Day weekend, the Healing Fields – Flags of Remembrance event will take place. Rows and rows of American flags will be placed in the open field next to First United Methodist Church on Thompson Lane in Murfreesboro. The event opens at 8AM Saturday May 29th, and the closing ceremony is at 5PM Monday, May 31st. This stirring display of 800 flags will bring the community together in a patriotic tribute to honor our heroes. Flags will remain on the field throughout the event and are available to be taken home after the closing ceremony.
To sponsor a flag, phone 615-641-0121 or go to HealingField.org/event/murfreesborotn21/
