(MURFREESBORO) Five Murfreesboro Rotary Club veterans were awarded Quilts of Valor this past Tuesday (11/16/2021) for their service and sacrifice to our country. The Quilt of Valor Foundation's mission is to honor active service members and veterans "touched by war" (WWII, Korean, Vietnam, Iraq, Desert Storm, Afghanistan, etc.) with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor.
Congratulations to:
- Rotarian George Pope - US Navy (1943-1946)
- Rotarian Robert Jones - US Navy (1964-1970)
- Rotarian John Calfee, Jr. - US Navy (1966-1979)
- Rotarian Pete Neff - US Air Force (1968-1997)
- Rotarian Robert Farris - US Army (1955-1985)
The Quilts of Valor is a single lifetime award. The Foundation began in 2003 with a dream, literally a dream by founder, Catherine Roberts, whose son was deployed to Iraq. The message in her dream was: Quilts = Healing.
Murfreesboro Rotary Club President Gloria Bonner said, "The Murfreesboro Rotary Club ceremony was in conjunction with the November theme of Celebrating Our Rotarian Veterans. It is important to celebrate our nation's heroes because they served our country, risked their lives, and protected us and our many freedoms. Veterans have earned our support and should be honored for their sacrifices. Each quilt says thank you for your service and sacrifice in serving our nation."
To date, approximately 286,000 quilts have been awarded nationally. The Quilt of Valor Foundation consists of approximately 11,000 plus volunteer quilt-makers, united to bring comfort and healing to our nations' military service members and veterans by offering tangible expressions of gratitude through an heirloom quilt.
The Murfreesboro Rotary Club was founded 102 years ago and was this county's first civic club. It meets every Tuesday at noon in the historic Carriage Lane Inn, 337 E. Burton Street.
