Rutherford County will have a new mayor. Bill Ketron finished third in a four-way race in the Republican primary. Joe Carr was the winner, receiving 6,862 votes or almost 38%. Rhonda Allen finished second, 593 votes behind. Ketron only received 24% of the vote.
The incumbents for Sheriff, Circuit Court Clerk and Register of Deeds held off challengers to retain their positions. Melissa Harrell won by 346 votes over second time challenger Robin Eades Gentry. Heather Dawbarn overcame former Murfreesboro City Councilman Kevin Wax by just under 11-hundred votes. Mike Fitzhugh will remain sheriff, defeating challenger Virgil Gammon by over 15-hundred votes. Tom Sissom came in third, garnering over 43-hundred votes.
Big changes coming for the Rutherford County School Board. Chairwoman Tiffany Johnson was defeated by challenger Katie Darby. Tim Holden, who was appointed after the October resignation of Lisa Moore, fell to Caleb Tidwell.
There were seven of the 21 Rutherford County Commission races contested in the Republican primary. Stephen Piercey held off Justin Taylor in District 2. Jonathan Beverly unseats Veronica Buchanan in District 6 by 87-votes. Joshua James takes out incumbent Joe Gourley in District 9. Phil Wilson holds off Tony Campbell by 35 votes in District 10, the seat Wayne Blair was appointed to fill. Anthony Johnson will be the District 11 commissioner, filling the seat of Rhonda Allen. Carl Boyd will fill the seat in District 12 for Robert Stevens, who is running for state representative and Wayne Irvin will take over the seat in District 14 from Virgil Gammon, who ran for sheriff.
In Smyrna, Kenneth “Coon” Victory told WGNS…
Under 10,000 people cast their vote during the early voting period, according to Rutherford County Election Commissioner Alan Farley...
Now that the race is over, we asked Farley if there is a deadline on when to remove campaign signs…
Farley told WGNS that those who win the election are more likely to head out the following morning to collect their signs, because they aim to preserve the signs they have for the next race.
The next chance to vote will be during the County General Election, which will take place in August.
