MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — The Middle Tennessee State University Murphy Center celebrated its 50th anniversary this week and MTSU President Sidney A. McPhee stated… Tuesday kicked off a yearlong celebration of the milestone that included a recent $6 million renovation to modernize the facility for the next 50 years.
33,000 Square feet of what is called a “smart window” replaced the outdated glass in the arena that is nicknamed ‘The Glass House.’ The new dynamic glass panels give the 11,500-seat arena a glistening new exterior.
Over the past 50-years, the Murphy Center has been home to basketball, volleyball, graduation ceremonies and more. Men’s basketball coach Nick McDevitt said… The new smart glass was manufactured by the SageGlass company. The new glass panels automatically tint and clear in response to the sun, eliminating the glare and heat challenges inside Murphy Center. Women’s basketball coach Rick Insell stated…
The roughly two-year glass replacement project from design to installation required the use of 16 semi-trailers delivering the 1,300 pieces of SageGlass to be installed. It marks the largest installation of dynamic glass in higher education in the United States.
