(MURFREESBORO) A new era in Murfreesboro history opens this coming Monday (10/24/2022) morning when Elder Family Ace Hardware opens its doors at 1807 Memorial Boulevard.
Haynes family members commented, “After 101 years as a local family-owned business, we have decided to step away from ownership of the hardware store. We would like to express our sincere and deep gratitude to our loyal customers and wonderful community.”
It’s interesting that the business history of the Haynes’ family and that of the Eders’ have so much in common.
Elder was founded on local service with roots going back 103-years to 1919 as Glenn Brothers Hardware in Chickamauga, Georgia.
53-years ago, Elder and three partners opened their first store just outside of Chattanooga in North Georgia.
With Monday’s addition of the Murfreesboro location, that brings the total to 23 in Tennessee and Georgia.
Now Elder’s sons carry on the legacy started by their father decades ago. Tom Glenn serves as president and Griff Glenn is the vice president and controller.
It’s interesting to notice the similarities of the two family businesses—both were built on service to customers and measured with longevity…one with 101 years when W. Tilman Haynes, Sr. and C. N. Haynes got together. The Elder’s go back 103-years to 1919.
Here in Murfreesboro, Tillman, Jr. joined the family business after World War II, and in 1951 Martha Anne Haynes married Donald Knight and that couple joined the family business. Until Monday’s sale, their daughter Cheryl and her husband Rich Schmidt and family ran the business.
NewsRadio WGNS continues to encourage the public to shop locally, as we welcome the Elder’ family to the Heart of Tennessee.
