Sheriff's Deputy Dash Camera Captures Big Rig Overturning on Tuesday in Murfreesboro

UPDATED - Rutherford County, TN - Deputies from the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office witnessed the crash and jumped into action to rescue driver trapped inside the overturned semi.  Officials report the three sheriff’s deputies that witnessed that semi-truck overturn on its side directly in front of them, trapping the injured driver inside on Tuesday on the New Salem Highway, recorded the incident on their patrol car dash-cam. Scroll down to watch the video that recorded the big rig making the turn from Middle Tennessee Blvd. onto the New Salem Highway near I-24.  

They responded immediately. Detention Deputy Deshaun Dawson saw diesel fuel leaking out of the rig. He jumped onto the side of the cab and tried to pull the injured driver out. “I started losing control,” Dawson said. “Deputy (Donavon) Brown assisted. If he wasn’t there, I would have fallen off inside.” The driver pushed with his uninjured leg and Dawson and Brown pulled him out and assisted him to the ground.
 
Patrol Cpl. William Travis radioed for help and monitored the leaking fuel. “I watched the semi roll over right next to me,” Travis said. “I jumped out and radioed to dispatch. They (Dawson and Brown) beat me to the driver’s door up in the air, reached in and pulled him out.”
 
Dawson and Brown began medical aid until the arrival of Emergency Medical Services paramedics. Brown, who was a part-time firefighter in Blount County, said he immediately checked for hazardous materials and the fuel leak. In reflecting on his actions, Brown said it was “weird working an accident in a cop’s uniform” rather than as a firefighter. Dawson said credited Brown for following his instructions and helping him. “If it wasn’t for him, I could have been hurt. I appreciate him assisting me,” Dawson said. “There’s nothing like pulling somebody out of a truck. I felt like I needed to protect and to serve like I was called to do.”
 
Even though they were late to roll call, Lt. Glen Edgell and fellow deputies showed support for Dawson and Brown. Cpl. Rebecca Jorgenson said they worked hard. “I am very proud of both of them,” Jorgenson said, adding Dawson saved an inmate’s life who needed medical attention recently.
 
Travis said Deputy Brown's and Deputy Dawson's actions reflect great credit upon themselves, their division, and the Sheriff's Office. “Their ability and willingness to immediately respond to the situation is a testament to their training and mindset,” Travis said (Scroll down for more and to see the video).

VIDEO ADDED: Murfreesboro, TN - A Rutherford County Sheriff's Deputy captured on video (Video Above), a semi-truck overturning in Murfreesboro, TN on Tuesday (April 11, 2023). The deputy's in-car dash camera was turned on and recording when the big-rig turned onto the New Salem Highway (HWY 99) from Middle Tennessee Blvd. To see PHOTOS of the accident, CLICK HERE.

The wreck occurred on Tuesday afternoon around 1 p.m. at the Middle Tennessee Boulevard intersection and in front of Heritage Farms Dairy. According to Murfreesboro Police, the semi-truck began leaking fuel after it overturned and came to a rest on a concrete traffic divider. Hazmat crews responded to clean the contaminated area. Murfreesboro Police reported emergency responders treated patients on the scene while authorities investigated the crash.

The Rutherford County Sheriff's Office said that long delays in traffic occurred, as a result of the accident. Alternate traffic routes had to be set-up for motorist to avoid going through the area while the crash was being cleared and goods from the big rig were transferred to another trailer. The trailer contained a heavy load that included pallets of tiles. First responders and clean-up crews worked together to empty the trailer, which had to be done before a wrecker could upright the 18-wheeler.
