(MURFREESBORO) Don't forget, the Rutherford County Historical Society meets at 7:00 o'clock this coming Monday (4/17/2023) night in Maney Hall at Oaklands Mansion (900 Maney Ave.). Jared Bryson will swoop us back to the days when airfields and air shows were the rage in Middle Tennessee. Take a virtual tour of Sky Harbor on the Old Nashville Highway near Florence Road, or hear about those exciting barn storming air shows.
Jared is currently the Director of Development for the College of Basic and Applied Sciences at Middle Tennessee State University.
One of his early courses allowed him to explore the concept of "air-mindedness"--an interest in and enthusiasm for the use and development of aircraft (Oxford English Dictionary)--especially as it concerns Rutherford County. An exploration of some of the county's airfields including Sky Harbor, Sewart Airforce Base (now Smyrna airport) and Murfreesboro, will be the subject of this talk.
Jared is a native of South Carolina and married a McMinnville lady. That brought him to Tennessee in 2014.
He spent more than a decade working in Cultural Resource Management (commercial archaeology), before moving to Sheffield, England to work in higher education.
He earned a bachelor's degree in archaeology from the University of Virginia and a MA in museum education from the College of William and Mary. Currently, he is undertaking coursework for a doctorate in Public History at MTSU.
Don't miss the Rutherford County Historical Society's meeting at 7:00 o'clock this coming Monday night at Oaklands Mansion. Jared Bryson will pilot us back to a different time for air travel!
