Rutherford County, TN - Cartoon characters in the U.S. got their start in American newspapers in 1905 with a sequence of hand drawn illustrations that became known as the comic strip. By 1929, comical characters like Popeye earned their own magazine, which were called comic books.
Over the year’s the Popeye character saw a few changes, but the storyline of the sailor battling a bully typically remained the same. Last year on Popeye’s 93rd birthday, he saw a makeover… Popeye turned 94 this year.
Today, comic books are still enjoyed by readers of all ages and to celebrate that love of reading, the Smyrna Public Library will be giving away FREE comic books… That was Ginger Graves, branch manager of the Smyrna Public Library… Every library location under the Rutherford County Library System will be giving comic books on Saturday, May 6, 2023. Most giveaways and local events will be between the hours of 10AM and 5PM. Garrett Crowell at the Linebaugh Library in Murfreesboro stated... The first Saturday in May will also bring with it artist's, craft tables for kids and lots of prizes at at the different library locations in Rutherford County.
