(Co.orado Springs, CO) Two Rutherford County teams competed in the 2023 GREAT RACE from St. Augustine, FL to Colorado Springs, CO. Howard and Doug Sharp had the best timing and took home the giant eagle trophy, bragging rights and $50,000! The Grand Champions are from Fairport, New York and drove a 1916 Hudson Pikes Peak Hillclimber.
The race is based not on speed but on endurance along with precise timing with the driver and navigator.
This was the third year Central Magnet School has participated in The Great Race. As in previous years, the local high school team drove Bonnie, a 1953 Pontiac Chieftain. Numbered 151 was provided by the Stones River Antique Car Club.
The Central Tigers placed third in the XCup Division and 33rd in their overall standings.
The other local entry was a father-son team, Kirk and Travis Bugg, who crossed the finish line Sunday (7/2/2023) in their 1961 Nash Cosmopolitan convertible. The Bugg's placed 5th in the SPORTSMAN DIVISION and 21st overall.
Again, a special thanks to Team Mechanic Dean Holland, who also was the race update reporter on WGNS.
