KMA Design, a Pittsburgh-based firm selected for the project, aims to establish a new Wayfinding and Signage program for downtown Murfreesboro. The primary goal is to generate innovative ideas for improving the existing signage in the downtown area. The Wayfinding program will introduce a distinctive branded directional signage and wayfinding system. This system will serve both residents and visitors, helping them locate civic features and contributing to the overall brand identity of the city.

Assistant City Manager Sam Huddleston expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity the Downtown Wayfinding program presents. "It's a great chance to enhance signage and create a brand for our historic downtown," said Huddleston. "We eagerly await input from our community through this survey to aid in the success of this program."

KMA Design, chosen by the City in August 2023 as the most qualified firm for the job, will provide recommendations for the Wayfinding program's implementation by December 2024. The scope of services includes a thorough assessment, analysis, code research, and construction documents to update Wayfinding signage throughout downtown.

The Wayfinding program is not limited to directional signs but extends to providing guidance to city amenities, recreational facilities, and key destinations like City Hall, the Rutherford County Judicial Center, and other civic buildings. The City Council approved the agreement with KMA on August 17, 2023, setting fees at $68,605 with a not-to-exceed budget of $150,000. The funds for this project are allocated from the Planning Department's FY24 operating budget.

Murfreesboro residents are encouraged to share their perspectives and contribute to the improvement of downtown signage through this exciting survey opportunity.
