Smyrna, TN - In the recent primary election, Smyrna residents made a clear statement about the fate of their General Sessions court. Despite a concerted effort to abolish it, the referendum was defeated by a substantial margin, ensuring the court's continued operation.

 

The final vote count for the referendum to amend the town charter stood at 3,329 in favor of retaining the court, while 1,332 votes were cast to eliminate it. The town was abuzz with activity, as evidenced by the proliferation of "Vote Yes" or "Vote No" signs adorning residents' yards and other locations.

 

The failed referendum would have resulted in the cessation of both the functions and funding of the Smyrna General Sessions Court. Smyrna stands as the only municipality in the county with its own general sessions court, while neighboring Murfreesboro, La Vergne, and Eagleville rely on the Rutherford County court system for similar services.

 

Having served as an integral part of the Smyrna Town Court for approximately three decades, the General Sessions court remains a cornerstone of the town's legal framework.
